Delegation Learns About Organic Tea Production, Innovative Products, Brand Expansion and Plans to Strengthen International Presence
Sikkim: As part of the Study and Experience Tour organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Shimla, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, a 13-member media delegation from Shimla today visited the Temi Tea Garden and Factory in Sikkim. During the visit, the media representatives closely observed the complete tea production process and gained first-hand information about the various stages involved, from the collection and processing of fresh tea leaves to the preparation of the final product.
The delegation was informed that Temi Tea is the country’s only certified organic government-run tea. Senior officials briefed the media representatives about various aspects of tea cultivation, collection of raw tea leaves, processing, packaging and quality control. The delegation also observed the technical processes involved in tea manufacturing at the factory and learned about the distinctive features of Temi Tea and the measures being adopted to maintain its quality standards.
During an interaction with the media delegation, Temi Tea Managing Director Ms. Radha Pradhan reiterated the organisation’s commitment to maintaining high quality standards. She also shared the roadmap for the expansion of Temi Tea and the development of the brand, highlighting the efforts being undertaken to adapt to changing market trends and evolving consumer preferences.
Ms. Pradhan said that Temi Tea is exploring possibilities for developing new and innovative products keeping in mind the emerging preferences of consumers, particularly Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha. With the objective of increasing the brand’s reach and popularity among younger consumers, new products such as Boba Tea and ready-to-drink pre-mix organic tea are also being considered. These initiatives aim to connect traditional organic tea with the preferences of the younger generation and the requirements of the modern market.
She further informed the delegation that a flexible franchise model is also being developed to expand the reach of Temi Tea across wider markets. Alongside domestic expansion, special emphasis is being placed on strengthening the brand’s presence in international markets. Ms. Pradhan underlined the need to enhance the presence of Temi Tea in countries including Japan, Germany, the United States and Korea, stating that necessary initiatives are being undertaken in this direction.
The Managing Director also highlighted plans to develop a distinct and strong market for organic tea in the coming years. She said that the growing consumer interest in organic and sustainable products presents significant opportunities for the organic tea sector. Temi Tea is therefore exploring new strategies focusing on innovation, product development, brand expansion and access to new markets.
Providing details about steps being taken towards cleaner and more sustainable production, Ms. Pradhan informed the media representatives that Temi Tea has converted its production fuel to LPG. The move is aimed at making the production process cleaner and more sustainable.
During the visit, the 13-member media delegation gained a comprehensive understanding of both traditional and modern tea production techniques at the Temi Tea Garden and Factory. The interaction also provided the visiting media representatives with valuable insights into organic cultivation, processing, quality control, innovation, brand development and the potential for Indian organic tea to expand its presence in international markets.
