*National Seminar on Classical Indian Education Inaugurated at IIAS Shimla*
*Two-Day National Conference on “Holistic Learning: Reviving Classical Indian Educational Principles” begins*
Shimla, The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla inaugurated a two-day national seminar on “Holistic Learning: Reviving Classical Indian Educational Principles” today at Rashtrapati Nivas, Shimla.
The opening session commenced with a Saraswati Vandana and Lighting of the Lamp, signifying the traditional invocation of wisdom and knowledge.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. ShashiPrabha Kumar, Chairperson of the IIAS Governing Body, who addressed the gathering virtually. She emphasized that the aim of education in the Indian tradition is to achieve harmony in life through wisdom—not merely information accumulation.
The keynote address was delivered virtually by Prof. V. N. Jha, former Director of the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Pune. He discussed the depth and relevance of the Guru–śiṣya tradition and stressed the importance of integrating ethical, spiritual, and intellectual development in educational frameworks.
Dr. Nibedita Banerjee, Fellow at IIAS and Convener of the seminar, introduced the theme, highlighting the need to revisit ancient educational ideals—rooted in the Guru–śiṣya tradition—to address the shortcomings of modern education systems focused largely on metrics and outcomes.
The welcome address was delivered by Shri Prem Chand, Library Consultant at IIAS. The vote of thanks was proposed by Shri Akhilesh Pathak, Public Relations Officer, IIAS, who extended gratitude to all speakers, participants, and organizers, especially the technical team ensuring seamless hybrid participation.
Following the inaugural session, the seminar proceeded with academic sessions on “Foundations of Classical Indian Education,” “Pillars of Traditional Pedagogy,” and “Integration of Ancient Knowledge in Contemporary Curriculum.” The seminar continues through April 30 and will conclude with a valedictory session in the evening.
